I want to dig a veggie garden. Any tips and tricks? I've never done this before, but I'm not a stranger to gardening. I've done some landscaping in my life and have raised herbs for cooking. I want a small vegetable garden in my backyard. How large of a bed should I need and should I put it in a full-sun spot or a shadier area? Keeping in mind that this is a small garden, what would be the best way to dig it? I'm not afraid to do some manual labor -- in fact, I like it. What tools will I need to till the ground? There's only grass there and the soil may be clayey. I'd like to grow some herbs like rosemary, mint and basil. I'd also like to have strawberries, tomatoes, garlic and a few other easy crops. What others would be good for beginners? Also, if there are any decorative flowers or plants that would make the garden look nice as well as functional, let me know. I live in USDA hardiness zone 6b, meaning the average temperature 0 to -5 degrees F.

Rotorvate my garden - tips / advice please? Hi there - we have a rather large garden of about 100 foot long (maybe a bit more!) by approx 25 / 30 foot wide. Since we moved in we have not done a great deal and aside from cutting everything back and tidying it up we think the next place to work on is leveling it out. The garden is on a slight slope downwards but the main issue is its VERY uneven. My neighbour tells me she had a man rotorvate her garden and they have been left with quite an even lawn. this cost quite a bit though and we would rather do manual stuff ourselves and spend money on the extras like decking / paving and so on! Therefore, it would be good if anyone can share any tips or advice as we don't know what we would need to do - ie do we need to remove the grass first? other tools we may need? approx timescale ie 1 solid week (7 days) we can hire a rotorvator for about £80 p/w which by the looks of it is about the same size as an ordinary lawn mower. will this be sufficient or would we need industrial?? thx

Starting a little garden, good soil tips? I want to start an tiny garden in my back yard. I have the spot picked out, which is coved in grass now (of course). My question is, do you have any tips on types of soil via bags at the local home improvement store I can get? I'm sure the soil now is not the greatest. I'm planning on digging away the grass to about 4 inches deep. I don't think I'll put one of those black 'mats' down to stop the weeds since I'm perfectly fine pulling them out by hand. I am a cherry tomato addict, and just want to plant a few plants to suppliment my habit haha

Any tips for keeping cats out of a garden ? My garden is always seemingly busy with the local cats. As a result my cat has become more an more timid and now will hardly go outside to do the toilet. She is older and has been spayed but just doesn't seem to like other cats. She was badly attacked by a cat at Christmas and needed a lot of trips to the vet. I have tried the usual shouting, chucking water but one cat in paticular just won't take the hint. The other night it got 2 full pint glasses of water over it's head and just spat at me and came straight back. Help ! I want my cat to be able to enjoy her garden in the nicer weather and I'm getting sick of having to clean litter trays. Any advice v much appreciated.

Question about planting a garden and hopefully some tips:)? I am going to start planting my garden this weekend. I am not sure if I should start the plants indoors or if i can plant them directly in the ground. I live in North Dakota and we just had snow last week. I am hopeful that that was the last of it. (But we do have a short growing season). Also when I do plant my garden, what is the best weed killer that I can put in when I plant the garden or even before?? My previous gardens were overcome by weeds almost immediately and it was difficult to keep up with. If you can give any other tips you may have about gardening they would be much appreciated. Some things I am planting: Watermellon, zuccinni, strawberries, green peppers, corn, potatoes, eggplant, pumpkins, tomatoes, onions, garlic, carrots, mellons, radishes, cucumbers, and a few other veggies. This will be my 4th year gardening and I am hoping to make it a good one:) Thank you

I have a medium size garden that is now filled with weeds, any tips on removing them? I work full time, and study through dis ed, and am a single mum, so I dont have time to do everything. One of the things thats been neglected, is my garden. I got a quote today from a home services company $70! The gardens only about 3x2metres. The cost seems excessive to me! Am now thinking about biting the bullet and trying to get it done myself. Any tips to make the job easier? As some of the weeds are rather hard to get out, I broke gardening tools on them during my last attempt. This plastic covering thing is interesting, but will it kill the plants>? My "plants" are some grass like bushes that were there when I moved in. I live in SE QLD Australia, and we are not allowed to water our plants and definitely not our weeds. I could face fines if I did. And the ground is very dry and hot.

tips for planting a garden this spring...? Im looking to plant a garden this coming spring and need some pointers from experienced gardners. Im thinking about planting a small plot behind my shed [against the back wall] (northern side). I figured it should get enough sun this way instead of being on the east or west side of the shed. I want to plant tomatoes, peppers, herbs, cucumbers, and maybe some peas. Since i figure that the plants that are closer to the shed will get more shade, any advice for what order to plant them? Or should I just consider moving the plot away from it and keeping it out in the open?
